Queen/Pentacles
Capricorn… Earth/Water
Keywords: nature-loving, maternal, fertile, independent, freedom-loving, stubborn, overly sensitive, touchy, opinionated, judgmental, fun-loving, aware, empathic, paranoid, whimsical, nostalgic, sentimental
The Dark Side:
The most contradictory and chilling irony about this Queen is her ability to embrace the mothering of and doting over of various young things, and the polar opposite aspect of being able to eat her own young alive with nary a twitch of the eyelid or a flinch of conscience. She both embraces all that is fertile and maternal, and she rebels from any of the mundane earthly restrictions and responsibilities. She thrashes at the cage of anything that would harness or limit her freedom, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, freedom of choices, just plain freedom. To be caged, to be nailed down, to be pinned to one spot, one individual, one situation, one lover, one anything, is her worst nightmare.
In her eternal chase of this thing called Personal Freedom, the Queen of Pentacles will rashly cut ties that would otherwise benefit her, alliances that should have lasted for years, connections of family, and personal history. And the really awful dark side of this is that the past winds up chasing her, like some demon specter. There may be periods of time for this Queen when she is haunted by voices of the past, or even fears them catching up to her. And yet, there may be those rare occasions in her life where she will be still enough, if only briefly, to touch someone with the magick of her being and her boundless expression of affection. Only a touch it will be, just a taste of her infinite wonderful possibilities, and then she’s gone.
It’s these oxymorons that give the Queen of Pentacles her shocking and charismatic appeal to those of us given a view of her life. If this is confusing to those of us touched or affected by this Queen and her actions, imagine the frustration and the confusion, the fear and sadness, within her own mind.
The Light Side:
She often has some outlet of expression for her inner feelings, and she’s often quite artistic and talented. This Queen may paint, or write, or be musically inclined, or have some other very personal and unique way of expressing her deepest feelings. Not only does she create beautiful things, she loves being surrounded by beautiful things, and she often seeks beauty out, whether it’s in nature, or art galleries, or out-of-the-way shops.
She is akin to a living mother-nature, and the wild things are especially drawn to her. Throughout her life, you will most likely find this Queen surrounded by animals, and it’s this connection that will prevail most strongly in her life.
Queen/Swords
Libra… Air/Water
Keywords: intelligent, scholarly, solitary, shielded, distant, cold, frigid, practical, persistent, gifted, determined, cynical, conspiring, fastidious, curious, philanthropical, traveler, contained
The Dark Side:
This Queen’s frosty exterior and her icy demeanor help her to keep the protective insulation of isolation surrounding her. This is her plan, even though there are times in her life where it may seem like a sub-conscious ploy of her intricate and daunting self. She has the unnerving ability to villainize and coldly distance individuals who do not fit into her life, this strange mold she’s created and adheres to.
Her eloquence, while both a unique and impressive gift, can be used in a ruthless and heartless fashion to cut down and dismember anyone who tries to get too close, anyone who tries to touch her heart. It’s there, her heart that is, and her ability to love and be loved; but her personality just can’t embrace the vibrational energy of it. Perhaps this Queen has suffered some great disappointment or rejection in life and now, as a protective measure, she cuts off anyone who tries to get close.
She’s vain, sometimes cringingly so, and she’s very wrapped up in her own world, whatever that may be. It is often how she claims her identity. Her ego tends to feed on itself, and she is quick to absorb praise and adulation, whether it’s genuine or not. She is almost totally intellectual and completely lacks any empathic or intuitive comprehension. This often makes her appear extraordinarily insensitive and totally disconnected with whomever she’s engaged with at the moment. It can also leave those trying to connect with her open-mouthed in shock when something that is obvious to most people goes over her head, and she misses the point completely, oblivious to the natural normal undertones.
Her oxymoron is that while she strives to maintain a solitary life, she secretly yearns for a connection of love and strong family bonds.
The Light Side:
The Queen of swords is an adventurer, a traveler, an explorer. She embraces the world and new experiences with open arms and exuberant enthusiasm. She fully absorbs her observations, ready to share her knowledge and discoveries in some way, most likely through acadamia, or a group setting of some kind (virtually never on an intimate one-to-one basis).
When she takes up a hobby, or a new interest, she is capable of immersing herself in it completely. Her knowledge and hands on involvement with it will expand and grow and reach boundless limits of imagination, creativity, development, and a sense of loyalty. This trait is what leads this Queen to the career success she often experiences in her life.
The Queen of swords is able to build a world of her own creation, to surround herself with those things she feels safe with. She places the perimeters of her existence right where she wants them, and she will stubbornly strive to maintain and guard this space, and her heart, with a vengeance.
Queen/Wands
Aries… Fire/Water
Keywords: dominating, over-bearing, manipulative, cruel, critical, jealous, responsible, capable, hard-working, detailed, consistent, self-conscious, proud, conflicted, easily insulted, unforgiving, a force to be reckoned with
The Dark Side:
She loves only what she can control, and then only under certain conditions and at times that are convenient, or mentally clear, for her. Her emotions are like a light switch, and those close to her will never know when there will be a quiet little click, and her feelings for you will abruptly change. With no warning or explanation, you will be met with the stony cold silence of rejection. That’s how this Queen works. It’s all or nothing.
For close friends, or a spouse, and especially for her children, the thing they strive for and work so hard for and find the most precious of all is her acceptance and approval. These are two very fragile commodities with the Queen of Wands. One can be gained and the other lost with the least amount of effort, and sometimes with no effort at all. She leaves behind her a string of broken relationships and bewildered ex’s. She leaves behind her offspring that are permanently wounded and scarred both by the requirements for her love and acceptance, and by the absence of her love and acceptance.
Perhaps this Queen underwent something radically disturbing and mentally challenging early in her life that left her unable to connect with people in a rational, even, and level way. I’ve often looked at this card, and this Queen, and thought about how and why she is the way she is. What happened to her? This section is all about extremes, and the extremes for this Queen have often confronted me in the faces of people across my reading table. I remember looking at one such woman thinking, “She was either sexually abused as a child, or she was spoiled rotten.”
The Light Side:
The Queen of wands has a naturally inquisitive curious nature, and she enjoys exploring, whether she’s exploring places, theories, or some subject uniquely interesting to her. She also enjoys her explorations more when she has someone to share them with. And it’s during moments like this when there is a pleasant warm connection of camaraderie possible with this Queen.
She is obsessed with order, and planning, and punctuality, and is excellent at seeing it all through. In this respect, she’s the perfect choice to be in charge of anything big that’s going to take some skillful organization. She will also not hesitate to delegate the right job for the right individual, it’s an instinct she has. She tends to be OCD, so make sure if you’re chosen for one of these tasks, you do it with fastidious attention to detail.
She can be the life of the party, in that she’s very good at keeping conversation flowing, keeping guests fed, encouraging games and interaction, making sure that everyone at the event is spoken to, feels welcome, and finds some enjoyment in the occasion. You might be someone she doesn’t see again for a year, but by god, on that night you’re going to feel like a close personal friend.
Her laugh is contagious, her face literally radiates light when she smiles. On her positive side, the Queen of Wands is one of the most enjoyable, stimulating, and vibrant Queens to connect with.
Queen/Cups
Cancer… Water/Water
Keywords: spacey, intuitive, psychic, impractical, romantic, unrealistic, inconsistent, transformational, shy, quiet, an easy target, unreliable, fairy-like, weak, child-like, confused, trusting, artistic, creative, ethereal, spiritual
The Dark Side:
The Queen of cups walks through life in a haze and fog of dreamy unawareness to the physical world, caught up in the ethereal, the unseen, the spirit side of existence. She can often tell you the innermost unspoken true feelings of someone she was conversing with but not remember what they were wearing. When she does plant her feet in the earth, she doesn’t connect with the physical world in the way most people do. She can hear voices within the wind in the trees; she can see the aura of plants; the wisps of magical beings in the garden; the thoughts and emotions of animals. To the mundane world, this Queen may often appear mentally fragile and on the edge. In reality, this is her reality, and sometimes her curse, she can see and hear and feel things that most people can’t.
Not many people will truly understand the Queen of cups, and some may even dislike her, though they may not understand why. There will be those who are disturbed at the nuances and unspoken connections often misunderstood by individuals who lack this sensitivity, and there will be those perhaps frightened by how easily she walks through the spiritual realm, so matter-of-factly, as though it were completely normal, when to most people it is not. She will always be the outsider, viewed with suspicion and sometimes disdain by the community around her, the clubs and cliques of society. At her most extreme, even the people who share her inner knowledge and experiences will find her bewildering, and her place at the outside edge of communal inclusion will be complete.
Her greatest downfall is the ability to lose herself, not being true to herself, in search of love and commitment. Relationships will be difficult for her. She will strive to connect with someone who can connect with her on a myriad of levels and meet her on her turf, as part of her inner world. Her search may prove futile, but it won’t be from lack of trying. She is artistic, creative, and wonderfully fluid, and she will use these abilities to try and transform herself to fit into the mold, to be what her suitor wants her to be, to fit into their life and their mind and their heart perfectly, in fairy tale fashion. In the midst of this hopelessly impossible endeavor, this Queen will often amputate the best parts of herself.
The Light Side:
The Queen of cups exists in a world of creativity, art, and magic. She has the uncanny ability to take almost anyone by the hand and lead them into this realm, even if they’ve never really connected with it before. She can describe what she sees and bring it to life so that you view it from a fresh perspective. She can write you a letter and make you feel as though you’re seeing the world through her eyes, incorporating minute details most of us miss. She can unlock the door to other worlds some of us have only suspected were there, and we will follow her over the threshold, holding her hand in child-like awe.
Her living space, though it may be modest, will always be beautiful, magical, calm, and inviting. Admittedly, it may often seem unusual to some with it’s unique objects and decor, but it will have a charm that is still irresistible. The physical world around her will mirror the inner world of her mind and her psychic self, her dreams, visions, and magical realities.
Her sense of empathy is strong, and she will try to save anything she sees that appears to be in need, or hurt, or hungry, or damaged, whether the two-legged human variety, or beings from the animal kingdom. Her space, therefore, is often filled with a menagerie of animals, and often with humans that have fallen through society’s cracks. It does not occur to her, at least not in her early life, that she cannot save them all.
If this Queen is wealthy, she will be a marvelous philanthropist, and will offer to the world everything she has to give in order to relieve suffering and spread peace, and calm, and hope, and healing. If she’s poor, she will use what she has to save, and feed, and care for anything that makes its way to her doorstep.
The biggest thing about the Queen of cups is her heart.
