MAJOR ARCANA DEEP DIVE I

0 The Fool

Up close and personal:

The Fool, off on his perennial journey to find himself, or some facsimile, has neglected to back up his journey with a little planning and foresight. But there’s more to it than that. He’s hanging onto something, something that he may not even admit to himself. He’s hanging onto something for fear of what will happen if he lets go. So in the interim, he plays free spirit, when often much deeper and more serious thoughts loom just beneath the surface of his persona.

The Fool has a difficult time facing crisis when it comes along in life. It’s not so much that he’s not aware of it, more acutely than anyone would guess, it’s just that he doesn’t want to fog up his rose colored glasses; and then there are those Fools who have become use to other people cleaning up the catastrophes of life for them. He doesn’t realize that with his foggy glasses the way forward is not clear. He won’t see that cavernous hole in the road ahead until it’s too late. Beware Fool, you bring on your own demise in the mad ambition of eluding responsibility.

As The Fool stumbles blindly forward in life, he somehow maintains the happy unbridled outlook of the perennial optimist. That’s one thing about this guy. He’ll keep his chin up no matter what the world is piling on top of him. It’s one of the perks of those rose colored glasses. And his optimism will be contagious, except to the individual who is left with broom and dustpan in hand to sweep up the mess. He’s always hopeful, The Fool, but be careful of catching his optimism, it more often than not has an ethereal quality about it that somehow eludes reality.

Affirmations for Meditation:

1. I will not be afraid to try something new.

2. I will accept and celebrate the adventures life sends my way.

3. I will relish and live everyday as though it were my last.

4. I will explore new ideas.

5. I will remember to plan ahead.

1 The Magician

Up close and personal:

The Magician, the one with power and abilities above the realm of the rest of us human beings. But is this a true scenario? Sometimes the power of The Magician can be greatly exaggerated. There are times when this individual is struggling just like the rest of us, but he may feel that there are higher expectations for him. (Like the Golden Child, so successful that he feels he will gravely disappoint if he is not repeatedly brilliant.) This is so unreal, and unhealthy. Behind (or beside, or in front of) this character stands a woman, a powerful, strong, nurturing woman. At her best, she may be his god-send, at her worst, she is what drives him to the brink of insanity. Isn’t this the psychology example most familiar to us?... “How did you feel about your mother?” But for The Magician, this can often be a very pointed, very defining, very eye-opening question with unexpected answers.

With all of the tools of power at his fingertips, along with the knowledge and gift that is the art of it all, The Magician still holds back. What is it that this individual clings to so desperately? It could be material things, but it more often than not goes much deeper than that. He’s afraid to let go. He’s afraid to let go because he might fall, so he hangs on with a tenacious grip -- to money, to relationships, to theologies, to ideas and opinions, not realizing that he might choke the life out of the very things he wishes to keep.

Communication will be the key to free The Magician. With all of his glorious external paraphernalia representing power and magic, the one thing that has eluded this individual is the incredibly potent ability to communicate openly, clearly, honestly with the people around him, and sometimes even with himself. This is where he needs to start to regain his balance, to clear his head, to pick up all the positive energy in the universe that is paused and waiting for him. He needs to breathe the element of Air into his soul, he needs to clear the pathway for communication at all levels.

Affirmations for Meditation:

1. I am the power.

2. Earth is my body, may it be healthy and strong.

3. Air is my mind, may it soar with infinite possibilities.

4. Fire is my passion, may the flames of my will burn bright.

5. Water is my intuition, may my dreams and visions speak to me.

2 The High Priestess

Up close and personal:

The Priestess may need to have more faith in herself. She judges herself too harshly, she sets the bar at unrealistic heights and then falls into the depths of despair when she can’t meet the expectations. High Priestess, so much of your angst, so much of your self-depredation is so unnecessary. You have to learn to grow in your own power and to be comfortable with this power. It’s yours, you deserve it, reach out and grab the golden ring.

Sometimes happiness seems to elude The High Priestess, when you’d think she’d have all this magic, all these solutions and formulas for success right at her fingertips. But the one who stands in the shadow of greatness is often the very one who is oblivious to it. Again, the idea of setting the bar too high, wanting perfection in everything, including daily family life... the perfect husband, the perfect children, the perfect home. High Priestess, you must learn that it’s all those endearing imperfections in life that make it real and attainable.

She will find her happiness in the form of a handsome Page who will bring the endless possibilities of a relationship into her life. This Page will most likely be the very one to lay a hand on her shoulder and reassure her that it’s okay not to be perfect, that she is perfection in her imperfect state. Love conquers all things, and it will conquer the low self-esteem for this High Priestess as well. Another golden ending...or rather, a beginning.

Affirmations for Meditation:

1. I am the goddess.

2. I celebrate Divinity in nature.

3. I celebrate the Sacred Feminine in my sisters.

4. I aspire to rise above the mundane.

5. I see the best in me.

3 The Empress

Up close and personal:

The Empress is Mother Earth and Mother Nature in a nutshell, all bound together in a glorious pattern of birth, life, death, and re-birth. But is this pattern always flawless for The Empress in her life? Certainly not. The Empress has fought her own battles, often in secret and most likely in shame. But she’s won, even if she won’t share her story with you, even if she keeps her past to herself. You’ll find, when touched by her, that there is a feeling of regeneration in her energy. She is a survivor.

The Empress is the perennial mother, the caretaker of every living thing under the sun. And this is truly how she feels, how she sees herself, and this is what she aspires to be and to do. She is The Nurturer. She’s good at it. Beneath her capable hands, all things will flourish, whether this be children, businesses, personal relationships; whatever she decides has possibilities for expansion and growth, whatever it is that she decides needs protection and a little extra care, it will flourish and blossom under her dominion.

As with most caretakers, the world takes them for granted, assuming that they are an endless well of nourishment for the world and all things in it. The problem with this is that the vessel will become depleted if not given a rest, an opportunity to replenish itself. The Empress should never be taken for granted. If you appreciate her in your life, then make sure that you look out for her as well. Whatever is needed to restore the energy -- give time, give praise, give back to this Mother of the Earth, so she can continue to instill her magic into the world.

Affirmations for Meditation:

1. I will plant seeds of love.

2. I connect with the Feminine Mysteries that are part of me.

3. I embrace my maternal instinct, to mother all things.

4. I will protect the Earth.

5. I will learn to nurture myself.

4 The Emperor

Up close and personal:

The Emperor, so immersed in the masculine energy of myths and legends. The old saying, “behind every successful man, is a woman” comes to mind. It’s so true. This Emperor most often has a very special woman in his life, one in which he feels he’s reached a mutual level of intellect and eloquence, a woman with whom he can stand shoulder to shoulder and share his ideas and beliefs, his wishes and fears, and his goals. Within The Emperor, there is a balance of the feminine. It’s true. Men can find and embrace their feminine side, with an equality that brings miraculous energy.

The Emperor, as all powerful and mythically strong as he might appear to those around him, has his own demons. He may be so afraid of tarnishing his image, of letting people down, of humiliating himself, that he will go to great lengths to keep these demons hidden from the world... and sometimes even from himself. It’s called denial. Help The Emperor in your life realize that it’s okay to be human.  You’re not expecting some super hero of movie fame who can take a beating and come out completely unscathed. This Emperor needs to reckon with that part of himself he struggles with. Allow him to do this with the knowledge that this does not diminish him in your eyes.

The power and majesty of The Emperor will often be tempered with the magic and mystery of a greater power, a divinity that releases the ability in all of us to spread our positive energy in so many undefinable and unexpected ways. This Emperor, so strong, so manly, so indomitable, has within himself a great heart, one that is touched with the feminine in so many positive ways. It shows his true character, his strength and self-confidence. The Emperor in this manner, is The Emperor at his best.

Affirmations for Meditation:

1. I will embrace my masculine side.

2. I will celebrate the men in my life.

3. I will retain control of my life.

4. I will find balance between me and The World.

5. I celebrate and rejoice in my personal power.
