0 The Fool

Keywords: Journey; adventure; new beginnings; a fresh slate; naivete; inexperience; travel; progression; trust; determination; lack of tact; mental illumination; communication

Planet/Uranus

Element/Air

Astrological Sun Sign/Aries

In a Nutshell: Beginnings

Upright Interpretation:

The Fool says, “We are off!”...on an adventure, that is. The world is your oyster, and hopefully you’re going to find a big fat white beautiful Pearl inside. Optimism is at its peak, bright lights and adventure are calling your name. You feel a need-- no, an absolute compulsion-- to explore the world, to start fresh, to begin at the beginning. It’s a new day, a new dawn, and you are vibrating with positive energy and infinite possibilities. This card is so full of in-your-face hyper energy it makes me feel like I’m running around in mad confusion with a gazillion things on my mind; everything that I’ve never done, everything that I’ve wanted to do, everything that I’m destined to do, and I’m trying to do it all at once. (No more caffeine for me!) And just as an after thought, don’t confuse “new beginnings” with youth. New Beginnings are Spirit’s salve for Life’s harshness and comes at all age levels.

Reversed Interpretation:

The Fool howls, “Oh, No!”, as he slips on a banana peel and goes right over the edge of that cliff he’s perched on. Reversed, The Fool is a disaster waiting to happen. The harsher, more obnoxious side of Aries comes through, only making situations more difficult, tempers hotter, patience shorter, confrontations sharper and more destructive. The Fool reversed doesn’t have a clue. He could be going to hell in a hand-basket for all he knows. The Fool is that poor guy who thinks he has a great idea, he’s sure of it, you can’t tell him otherwise; the only problem is he hasn’t thought it through. Almost everyone has at least one great big “Oops” experience in their life. Don’t feel bad.  It is The Fool reversed.

1 The Magician

Planet/Mercury

Element/Air

Astrological Sun Sign/Aries

In a Nutshell: Power

Upright Interpretation:

“You have the Power!”...says The Magician. He’s every great wizard or powerful witch who’s ever been portrayed in folklore or the media. He’s all the over-the-top special effects type magic you’ve ever wished you had. (And yes, we’ve all wished we could twitch our nose and get what we want.) He’s a reminder, just in case you’ve lost sight of the fact, that you are strong and capable and have it within yourself to be successful, to be a winner. Pick up this power, The Magician tells us, and run with it!

Reversed Interpretation:

Someone has found your weak spot and is draining you, or at least making you believe that you’ve lost “it”-- the ability to win and succeed. Sometimes we actually do this to ourselves, through low self-esteem, through a lack of self-confidence. Sometimes this ugly little character called Doubt slips in, and convinces us that “we can’t”, when really “we can”. Don’t let your energy, your magic, and your strength drain away. Turn this card around, you can do it. Yes!-- that’s the magic...You Can Do It!

2 The High Priestess

Keywords: mysticism; magic; occult; personal power; ritual; witchcraft; feminine mysteries; goddess

Archetypes: Lady of the Lake; Sally Owens (Practical Magic); Glenda, the Good Witch of the North; Mother Superior; Gloria Steinem; Z Budapest

Correspondences:

Number/6

Planet/Venus

Element/Earth

Astrological Sun Sign/Taurus

In a Nutshell: Intuition

Upright Interpretation:

The Goddess lives in You...She does. This is the most magical card of the deck for me, because it encompasses everything near and dear to my heart. It is the universe’s ritual for all the Feminine Mysteries; it is the magic of all the women throughout all of history who have claimed their birthright as witches, or shamans, or priestesses of the Goddess. It’s every woman out there who discovers her own personal power, either through deliberate study and devotion, or by stumbling upon it in a totally random and miraculous way. “You are sacred”, says the High Priestess, “Revere the Goddess, who is You.”

Reversed Interpretation:

You haven’t discovered the Sacred Truths yet. You don’t know what horizons can be reached, what power you can wield. You haven’t unlocked the door, you haven’t found the key-- the key to the Goddess...and to yourself. Don’t be afraid, open your eyes and you’ll see Her. You’ll see the magical potential within yourself, all the wonderful infinite possibilities waiting to be realized. Open your eyes and find the magic...magic in nature and symbolism, in ancient stories and lore; magic in the mundane; magic in all the small moments of your life and the unexpected individuals you’ll meet on this journey.

3 The Empress

Keywords: fertility; Earth, the element and the planet; nature; birth; abundance; wealth; maturity; strength

Archetypes: mother; Mrs. Cleaver; Barbara Bush; Mother Nature; the Goddess; Margaret Thatcher

Correspondences:

Number/3

Planet/Venus

Element/Earth

Astrological Sun Sign/Taurus

In a Nutshell: Fertility

Upright Interpretation:

This card carries the energy of every maternal authority figure that’s ever touched your life. She’s everyone from your own mother, to your fourth grade elementary teacher, to that crabby old woman who lives across the street-- you know the one, that solitary woman who’s tiny but formidable, the one that everyone is afraid of. The Empress is the epitome of female fertility and abundance in all aspects of life-- physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally. She is it. This icon wreaks of flower seeds yet to sprout; babies yet to be born; creatures dropping their young in fresh green fields. She is the summer breeze on a hot day, and a howling winter gale around the roof of the house. I Am...She Is.

Reversed Interpretation:

Something has died; something has not sprouted; something is wilted and sick; something has not been born. This ominous icon holds her scepter aloft with defiant and blazing accusation. The energy of Taurus comes racing to the forefront, stubborn and willful, belligerent, plowing through life and circumstances and people, showing no mercy. The Empress reversed is wilted vines; decaying fruit; soured milk; depleted supplies; meager sustenance.

4 The Emperor

Keywords: masculinity; strength; endurance; power; wisdom; ancestry

Archetypes: father; grandfather; Mr. Cleaver; Geronimo; General Eisenhower; President Kennedy

Correspondences:

Number/9

Planet/Mars

Element/Fire

Astrological Sun Sign/Aries

In a Nutshell: Domination

Upright Interpretation:

Wow, this card gives us a sense of relief...“Dad will take care of everything.” It’s that child-like kind of feeling. Someone who’s older, stronger, more experienced with life is going to take charge and everything is going to be okay, whether this authority figure is an actual person or Spirit stepping in to make sure things will work out, to lift you over that monumental stumbling block you’re about to hit. Breathe a sigh of relief, order will return, the path will be cleared, the cavalry is coming.

Reversed Interpretation:

The foot has come down, the line is drawn, the buck stops here. The Emperor jerks you by the collar and plans on whipping you back into shape, whether this is what you want or not. The energy is overbearing, extremely controlling, and somewhat suffocating. Sometimes maybe we’re not suppose to have our way paved smooth and clear before us; maybe sometimes we’re suppose to learn a few of life’s harsh lessons on our own. Help comes, but it could come with a price.
